REPRESENTATION IN FILM OPENINGS
REPRESENTATION OF SOCIAL GROUPS AND SOCIAL ISSUES IN MAINSTREAM MEDIA
Hi there folks! Hope you're enjoying the ride. So today our topic of discussion is 'Representation of Social Issues in Film Openings'. So the question arises. Does it even matter? Is it so important that we should discuss it on our special journey?
The answer is YES. It's very important. In today's day and age, where media is the main forecaster of culture, representing social issues and individuals is very important for empowerment and individual identity. It becomes very hard for an individual or a particular group to find comfort and value when they are being ignored, or worse, alienated by the popular media.
Few main things that are emphasized in media are:
- Age
- Gender
- Race
- Financial status
- Job
- Culture / Nationality
Each group is usually represented by a specific stereotype. For example, the women are shows as week and meek whereas the man is shown as the provider. Film makers use stereotypes to represent characters. For example, an old man might be shown with a stick, or a rich businessman be shown in an expensive three-piece suit. It doesn't mean all old people carry a stick, or all rich businessmen wear suits.
These are just simple ways to convey information in a movie without actually telling them.
