GENRES AND THEIR OPENINGS
In order to distinguish between types of art, pre-production, each film is assigned a respective genre. Plato in 400 B.C introduced us first to genres. And we've taken and expanded that idea until now it is one of the main distinctions between how movies are made.
Let's discuss the basic genres.
1. Action
Action is a genre which predominantly features physical motion takes precedence in story telling. The film usually has fast moving stunts, car chase scenes, fights, and races. The hero is usually an individual that faces incredible odds, and concludes with the hero defeating those odds. Examples include The Terminator, Jack Reacher, and The Grey Man.
2. Comedy
Secondly, we have comedy. Comedy is a genre that focuses on inducing laughter and creating a playful atmosphere for the viewers. The genre often humorously exaggerates the situation, and the language. Sometimes the comedies rely on physical and crude humor. Examples include Zoolander, Meet the Parents, and Borat.
3. Drama
Thirdly, there is drama. This genre features stories with high stakes and a lot of conflicts. They are mainly plot-driver and demand that every character and scene move the story forward. Dramas follow a clearly defined narrative plot structure, portraying real-life scenarios or extreme situations with emotionally driven characters. Examples include The Godfather trilogy, Boyhood, and Dunkirk.
4. Fantasy
Fourthly, we have fantasy. these films are the ones that feature fantastic themes, usually witchcraft, supernatural events, myths, or exotic world. These films usually have an element of magic, wonder, and the extraordinary in them. Examples include Alice in the Wonderland, Chronicles of Narnia, and The Hobbit trilogy.
5. Horror
Then we have horror films. These start with a shocking first scene to set the tone right away. They turn normal locations into scary places. Newer horror genres are on the rise; featuring zombies, and haunted dolls. Examples include IT, The Conjuring, and The Exorcist.
Note for the passengers: this is the most disliked genre of the driver. He does not like scary things, and prefers to live in a world of fantasy, surrounded by his 3 cats (picture is shared at the bottom)
6. Mystery
Then we have the mystery genre. In this genre, many at times the viewer is presented with information not available to the main character. The main character usually explores the unsolved crime, finds the perpetrator, and puts an end to the effects of the the villain. Examples include Sherlock Holmes, Momento, and Shutter Island.
Then we have the romance genre. Simply said, Romance is a genre where the plot revolves around the love between two main characters as they experience the highs and lows of love. Focus on passion, emotion, and the affectionate romantic involvement of the main characters and the journey that their love takes them through turmoil. Examples include Romeo and Juliet, Titanic, and The La La Land
8. Thriller
Then we have the thriller genre, In this genre, the opening scene should introduce the crime, conflict, or stakes as quickly as possible. An atmosphere sudden violence, such as crime and murder, characterize thrillers. The tension usually arises when the character(s) is placed in a dangerous situation, or a trap from which escaping seems impossible. Examples include The Machinist, The Usual Suspects, and Parasite
And that it the brief introduction of the main genres of film industry, For our own project, we will choose one of them. We're currently at a crossroads and will choose one of them for our own product (frankly, I'm inclining towards a psychological thriller, but let's see)
