 Reading Film Genres

In order to create an artistic masterpiece, we must be aware of its constituent elements. So let's talk about them.

1. Mis-en-Scene:

Mis-en-scene is a French word that literally means 'setting the stage'. Simply said, it refers to the stage design and arrangements of actors in scenes. Everything that makes up a single shot, is known as 'Mis-en-scene'. So, what are those factors that make up Mis-en-scene?

1. Costume

2. Character

3. Props

4. Lights (intensity, direction, color)

5. Acting (microexpressions and performance)

6. Actors' positioning in a shot (blocking and staging)

7. Production design

8. Background

These are the fundamental elements of mis-en-scene. Now let's talk about cinematography.

2. Cinematography

So basically, cinematography refers to the study study of camera angles in relation with lighting. It consists of 6 factors.

1. Lighting

2. Shot size

3. Camera focus

So that is it for cinematography, now let's move down to our next aspect, Sound Design.

3. Sound Design

Designing the sound in such a way that it not only fits the visual movement, but actually help raise the interest of the viewer, is a much needed skill for successful film makers. Other than its psychological benefits, sound is a powerful tool that can be used to make the viewer be fully engrossed in the movie.

Sound has different types. The main ones are as follows:

Diegetic sounds refer to the sound that originates from the world of film. For easier understanding, any sound that a movie character can hear is diegetic.

2. Non-Diegetic sound:

Refers to the sound that only we can hear, and not the characters. For example, a laugh track behind the F.R.I.E.N.D.S TV show is something we can hear,Phoebe and Chandler can't.

So the last, but not the least element we will be talking about is Editing.

4. Editing
